Notes: A row is a Wikidata item that is an instance of a city class (anything classed under 'city', Q515 — e.g. big city, megacity, national capital, prefecture-level city of China, metropolitan municipality) or is the capital of a sovereign state, with a most recent population of at least 1,000,000. Population is the most recent dated population statement (pq:P585 point in time, ignoring future dates and deprecated values), which may be a census or an estimate; figures restricted to part of a city (e.g. only citizens, or the urban agglomeration) are ignored. If the most recent figure is not a census and implies growth of more than 7% a year over the previous dated figure — in Wikidata this usually means a metropolitan-area number was entered for the city — the previous figure is used instead. To avoid double counting, metropolitan areas, urban areas and conurbations are excluded, and any city that Wikidata places inside another listed city (a district, borough or county-level city within a prefecture-level city) is dropped in favour of the larger unit. City boundaries follow each country's administrative definition, so some entries — notably Chinese prefecture-level cities such as Chongqing — include large rural areas and are not comparable with a 'city proper' elsewhere. Former cities with a dissolution date are excluded.
